According to this, it seems perhaps hunter-gatherers were buidling stone monuments before they were building houses.
And just looking at the pictures, I'd go so far as to suggest the builders were building in imitation of even earlier monuments. I mean, they hadn't built the first pillar, yet they seem to be building in imitation of pillars.
